Sears and Kmart just posted their closing list.  To no surprise, many of these malls have or will soon be covered on Sky City.  Here is a run down of Sears stores and Kmarts with links to ones in malls I covered:

1. Middlesboro Mall: Middlesboro, KY (Sears Hardline store)
2. Halls Mill, AL [5451 Halls Mill Rd] (Sears Essentials)

  • 3020 Se Federal Hwy Stuart FL 34997
  • 4560 Forest Hill Blvd W Palm Beach FL 33406

30. Atlanta, GA [230 Cleveland Ave] (Last Kmart in Atlanta City Limits)

32. Columbus, GA [5600 Milgen Rd]
33. Jonesboro, GA [7965 Tara Boulevard]
34. Midlothian, VA [11003 Hull St Rd]
35. Pompano Beach, FL [2421 N Federal Hwy]

It should be noted this list is preliminary with more closings likely.  At least one on those list I predicted which was the closing of the store at Signal Hill Mall.  I expect the store at Southlake Mall in Atlanta to probably join this list when they wrap this up (and this post will be modified to show that).  It should be noted that no Kmarts in malls were on this list.  However, Sears locations in malls also anchored by Kmart were included.

  1. There is a K-mart store where we live that is a ghost town, even the weeks prior to Christmas.... people say "we go to K-mart because there is never any one there and no lines." I have no idea how they stay open and I was very surprised to see the store wasn't on the list (yet).

  2. Though it's stores were quite something many a moon ago when I was a kid, I have been very irritated by Sears over-pricing for quite some time and seldom shop there. I think these closing could have been held off by lowering everyday prices from nose-bleed high to a level more attractive to would-be buyers. The quality of Kenmore products has been dropping as well.

There's no great advantage in working there for commission only salespersons either. I'm sorry to see the company going down but still feel it's getting exactly what it deserves.

  3. Good post! A lot more of the stores are probably very under-performing by most retail standards, but because SHLD owns the building/land or has locked in/negotiated low leases, these stores will hang on, for now at least.

  4. Why do you think all these Sears and Kmarts are closing. The one at the Macon Mall is the only anchor not changed. (Belk Matthews to Belk) (Davidson's to Macy's to Rich's to Rich's-Macy's to Macy's) (JCPenney gets a new walk way upstairs to the new east wing 1997)

  5. The Kmart at Claypool Hill mall should be closed by now.
